Surfing in Bali - A Transformational Journey
With its postcard-perfect beaches and jaw-dropping vistas, it's easy to see why Bali is a magnet for visitors. But what truly sets this tiny island apart is its unique atmosphere.
When I first set foot in Bali, I expected the typical tropical paradise – and yes, it delivered. But what really got me hooked was the vibe. It's like the island itself breathes culture and connection, from the daily rituals to the pulse-pounding surf scene.
Growing up away from the coast, surfing was never on my radar. It wasn't until my late twenties that I dared to catch my first wave. Bali was a game-changer for me.
Here, I met amazing surfer girls who not only shared their skills but also their encouragement. Suddenly, the intimidating waves didn't seem so daunting in this male-dominated sport. The support and friendship I found among these women boosted my confidence and fueled my passion.
And let me tell you, the people of Bali? They're the friendliest bunch you'll ever meet, making it easy to slip into the rhythm of island life and become part of something truly special.
Catch the Wave of Your Dreams
For me, riding the waves in Bali feels like living out a long-awaited dream. Although some surf spots work better in different seasons, Bali's tiny size means you're never far from a killer surf spot. Hop on a scooter, and you're set for a year-round surfing adventure! Now, the real question is: where to catch the best waves and when?
Canggu
Canggu has become the new tourist hub in Bali, and for surfers, Batu Bolong beach is the ultimate starting point. Here, you'll master everything from paddling to reading and riding the waves.
Known for its left and right peaks and mellow breaks by local standards, Batu Bolong attracts plenty of longboarders. While it can get crowded, the expansive playground ensures the lineup remains approachable, spreading out the surfing crowd.
Uluwatu
Uluwatu is known as a laid-back surfer village, and it lives up to the expectations. This cliffside village has multiple world-class surf breaks to choose from, and whether you are a shortboarder or a longboarder, you can be sure to find waves to your liking.
One of my personal favorites in Uluwatu is Balangan Beach. Unlike many other beaches in Bukit, you can access the surf point directly from the beach with a short paddle out. Balangan is a fast-breaking left reef break that usually stays open for a long ride.
Sanur
Sanur holds a special place in my heart. This quaint fishing town isn't just about boats and nets; it's also a hidden gem for surfers. One spot I absolutely adore is known as the Baby Reef. It's just a quick 10-minute boat ride from Pantai Mertasari, where you can easily rent a boat.
At Baby Reef, you'll find two sweet breaks – one to the left, one to the right – both serving up those perfect, long, shoulder-high waves that keep you smiling from ear to ear.
Planning the Perfect Surf Trip
Bali has it all, catering to every surfer's dream, so planning the perfect surf trip begins with understanding what you seek from your holiday and what your surfing level is.
When to Visit?
During the rainy season (September-March), the waves will be the best on the East Coast of Bali whereas during the dry season (April-August), the West Coast will offer the best surf. Uluwatu, however, stands out as a year-round surf haven.
Book Your Base
Once you've pinpointed your preferred surf spots, it's time to look up accommodations. Stay close to the spot you will be surfing the most, as almost all surf spots in Bali are 1-hour scooter ride. However, if it is your first time visiting, it is recommended to book only a few nights first in case you want to switch or try out staying in different places.
Pack Your Essentials
Prepare your surfboard, wax, leash, board bags, and other essential gear. If you prefer traveling light, many surf shops in Bali offer rentals, allowing you to leave bulky equipment at home.
Consider a Surf Guide
When you are heading out to a new surf spot for the first time, it is recommended to hire yourself an instructor, whether you are experienced in surfing or not, to show you the ropes and guide you in the water.
Enjoy Your Bali Experience
Ride the waves of your dreams in Bali and stay safe by following the surf etiquette in the water and respecting the local communities!
